Barack Around the Clock: Time’s Almost Up

Just in case you haven’t had enough of President Barack Obama, you can put a picture of him on your wrist, courtesy of ObamaWatches.com. The 2012 Collection features 10 different designs, but “Barack Around the Clock” has outsold the others by four to one.

For $75, you can order a watch of your own design. However, there is a caveat:

If you create a hateful design, you know, something really bad and nasty about President Obama, then we reserve the right to not make your watch and we’ll refund your money.

Frank Gehry to Design DC Eisenhower Memorial

Dwight David Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, was once known as a “do-nothing President.” (Those were the days.) His presidential legacy includes creating the Interstate Highway System, completing the St. Lawrence Seaway, and establishing the Federal Aviation Administration. (In retrospect, it seems like his detractors might have been wrong.)

President Eisenhower will be honored with a memorial in Washington DC. Gehry Partners, LLP, the Los Angeles-based architectural firm headed by Frank O. Gehry, has been selected as lead designer by the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission and the General Services Administration. Mr. Gehry is well known for his designs of the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in Chicago.

The Eisenhower Memorial will be the seventh national presidential memorial in Washington DC. It will be built on a four-acre site, across from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Armani Arts Institute

The glitterati must have thrown away the memo from the doom-and-gloom leader of the Free World, President Barack Obama, advising them of the global economic crisis. They showed up Tuesday night for the opening of Giorgio Armani’s new 43,000 square-foot flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The celebration was a scaled back affair. (Maybe Mr. Armani did get the memo.) No caviar was served at this party. The guests endured filet mignon and roasted chicken. No one has come forward to reveal whether any of the victuals actually touched the lips of aspiring fashion designer Victoria Beckham, who showed up coatless in a mini-dress.

Of course Posh Spice’s husband David Beckham was also there. So was New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Alicia Keys, Ricky Martin, Mira Sorvino, Liam Neeson, Josh Hartnett, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Mayer and Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford.

In conjunction with the opening of the store, Mr. Armani announced a new initiative called the Armani Arts Institute. The famous Italian designer has donated $1 million through this initiative to fund the arts in New York public schools. The money will be channeled through the Fund for Public Schools. Caroline Kennedy, who attended this event, is the fund’s vice chair.
