On Sunday’s broadcast of Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer asked former Vice President Dick Cheney to take sides in the dispute between former Secretary of State Colin Powell and radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
General Powell recently stated, “I think what Rush (Limbaugh) does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without.”
Mr. Limbaugh responded with this assessment of General Powell:
What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat, instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party. He’s not. He’s a full-fledged Democrat.
He’s out there saying I am killing the Republican Party while he endorsed and voted for Obama. The Republican Party nominated the exact kind of candidate Colin Powell thinks the Republican Party should have and he still endorsed Obama.
Vice President Cheney did not hesitate to take sides. “Well if I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I’d go with Rush Limbaugh,” he said. “My take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn’t know he was still a Republican.”
It seems that Vice President Cheney was merely stating the obvious. There is no need to remake the Republican Party when the Democrats already share the agenda that General Powell espouses. Last week he made these remarks in a speech: “Americans are looking for more government in their lives, not less,” said General Powell. “Americans do want to pay taxes for services.”
One more thing. When it comes to inserting into the “public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without,” what did General Powell think of Wanda Sykes’ remarks about Rush Limbaugh at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner? In a pointed attack on Rush Limbaugh, Ms. Sykes said:
Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails, so you’re saying, ‘I hope America fails’, you’re, like, ‘I dont care about people losing their homes, their jobs, our soldiers in Iraq’. He just wants the country to fail. To me, that’s treason.
He’s not saying anything differently than what Osama bin Laden is saying. You know, you might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker. But he was just so strung out on OxyContin he missed his flight.
Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails, I hope his kidneys fail, how about that? He needs a good waterboarding, that’s what he needs.
President Barack Obama got a good chuckle out of Ms. Sykes’ ill-humored remarks. Apparently there is always room for “nastiness” on President Obama’s side of the aisle.
